Happy Christmas from Bla Bheinn B&B on the Isle of Skye

This is going to be a quick blog with more pics than words.

We awoke to bright sunshine, a rare clear day, on Christmas morning. Well almost mid-morning actually as the sun doesn’t really rise above Bla Bheinn until 09:00, but who cares it was Christmas day and Stuart and I spent it together, just the two of us and our doggies.

Our new dining room is just about complete – the subject of my next blog – so after opening our lovely presents, we ate a simple breakfast of mushroom omelettes with coffee and settled down to a relaxing day of phoning the  ‘kids’ and generally doing not very much at all.  Oh its not that I don’t ‘chat’ regularly with them on Facebook – I just love to hear their voices and listen to their news, perceiving the nuances of what they say in the tone of their voices, pride in their achievements etc. Speaking briefly to my youngest grand daughter whilst listening to the squealing in the background as siblings and cousins opened presents to the background chatter of the ‘grown-ups’ was especially nice coz I miss them all loads. Then chatting to my grandsons who I miss terribly coz they’re growing up too fast for me to keep up was all tinged with the wistfulness of missing being close enough to see them regularly coupled with the never ending joy I get in living miles away on this beautiful Island in the Highlands of Scotland.

Anyway, on a beautiful day like yesterday, we just had to go for a walk. The hills were out of the question it turned out, as every rock was covered by a fine sheen of ice making walking a lottery I wasn’t prepared to play. So we drove down to Glenbrittle beach along roads that were mainly fine by sometimes icy and made our way to the coast. It was crisp – even the pebbles on the beach were crunchier than normal with the ice – and beautiful as only a beach in mid afternoon in winter can be.

On our return, with rosy cheeks, we settled in to eat our roast Pheasant etc. with a fab Orange cake (if I do say so myself) recipe courtesy of Tom Kerridge, with ice cream for afters.  And what better way to finish off Christmas day but to watch ‘The Hobbit – The  Unexpected Journey’ with a second instalment tonight of the second movie in the series ‘The Desolation of Smaug’. It was bliss, simple pleasures in a glorious setting.
